The god shape hole that keeps you wanting...

Rob Brezsny writes: U2"s singer Bono, says that all of us suffer from the sense that something"s missing from our lives. We imagine that we lack an essential quality or experience, and its absence makes us feel sad and insufficient. French philosopher Blaise Pascal referred to this emptiness as "a God-shaped hole." Bono adds that "you can never completely fill that hole," but you may find partial fixes through love and sex, creative expression, family, meaningful work, parenting, activism, and spiritual devotion. I bring this to your attention, because I have a strong suspicion that in the coming weeks you will have more power to fill your God-shaped hole than you"ve had in a long time.

If you look at Bono"s take on the human condition, that we are designed to be forever somewhat unfulfilled, to experience a gnawing black hole in our insides, what Bono calls the "god-shaped hole" a 3% truth value statement... then, muscle test says, the truth part is that some things provide temporary relief, reprieve from the feeling of that emptiness, but it is his list that is flawed... not the idea: him including meaningful work, for example, don"t belong to the list. Neither does creative expression... the rest: it depends on you. Parenting could fulfill you, but often you don"t know what the heck you are doing, so it leaves the hole unfilled.

The idea that this hole is part and parcel with being human is valid empirically, and it also makes sense that a physically weak species can only survive if they have this desire to be more, to know more.

Every desire is like a hole... but the desire to know more is what made humans human...

The desire to know more is what we call epistemic curiosity... don"t let the strange word, epistemic distract you: epistemic simply mean "for knowledge", as opposed for distraction, for entertainment, for pleasure, for diversion... This second kind we call diversive curiosity.

Epistemic curiosity is immensely satisfying. diversive curiosity leaves you hungry, like Chinese food, or romance novels. Good for Chinese restaurants, or romance writers, bad for you.

Diversive curiosity is for diversity, but while you are seeking diversity, you are undernourished intellectually... just like Chinese food, or sugar laden junk food leaves your body undernourished.

There is a third kind of desire: the desire for something to have... an experience, to own, possess, dominate, or have power over.

Unfortunately the desire for pleasure, possession or dominance or power is stronger in the largest segment of the population, and it"s growing.

Epistemic curiosity brings fulfillment, a sense of well-being, like good food. Diversive curiosity, or the desire for possession, dominance, power, or pleasure leaves you with a gaping black hole that ultimately consumes your life and your dreams and aspirations.

Unfortunately, for the largest majority.

Why is this so?

In my experience with lots and lots of people, when the desire number is up... life satisfaction and the willingness to earn what you desire is down.

The two numbers: ambition and desire are a good representation for epistemic curiosity and diversive curiosity or the desire for experiences.

The two numbers lead to mutually exclusive futures.

I"ll bring an example from food again: you either have good health where what and how you eat nurtures your body, or you"ll be given to eat the kinds of stuff that seemingly fills the hole in your being... by being immediately satisfying.

Or another example: you either do your work, or give in to your distractions, email, texting, or even thinking about your troubles.

The main difference between the two kinds of living is the speed with which they delivery satisfaction. Fast satisfaction delivers transient results... the fence that goes up fast, comes down fast.

Sugar yoyo is a great example. Masturbation is another great example... especially if you compare it with the experience with someone who you love, appreciate, and deepen the connection with every day.

Or romance novels... darn, how I hate those! They steal your life, your joi de vivre: the pleasure of living, the will to do anything... especially something without a need to work for the results.

Your TLB is a very accurate indication to how fast you want the results to come. Even an insignificant sounding climb or your TLB from 1 to 2 is a huge difference between what you are willing to invest in and how much.

In my programs I take you where you are at, and with thoughtful and personalized methods, exercises, conversations, I attempt to accomplish the impossible: turn you towards curiosity and away from the immediate pleasure.

You weren"t always like this. There was a turning point in your life where you became the pleasure seeking person you are now.

My job is to take you back there... to before the turning point, and pick up the pieces.

We do this in the Playground, and we do this in the Juice Exercise.

The Juice Exercise is a deceptively easy, light, and innocent feeling process, that done well gets to the heart of the matter, and reveals the innocent and still curious you, so we can bring the divine core of you to you life, now.

The divine core of a person is their epistemic curiosity. That, epistemic curiosity is the only real difference between animals and humans.

I am changing... Why aren"t you?

I have been changing. Subtly.

The biggest problem with subtle changes is that they go unnoticed. And if you are like most people, you want encouragement, you want people to see that you are becoming something better.

But your environment is about as aware and as present as you are, which means: not very. And besides they are busy having their head up their ass... so until you are very very very different, they don"t notice it.

A good example is your weight: if you drop two dress sizes... then they notice it. But if you are doing it right, in a sustainable fashion, it"s taken you months... And for those months you had gotten no feedback.

Netflix addiction

Netflix is great. The shows are what the shows are.

And Netflix, or actually the shows can become addictive.

I watch Netflix almost every day. A number of shows start out OK, but turn addictive around season 4.

You notice that you became addicted if you are craving it, thinking about it, wishing it were already that time of the say when you can watch it.

The shows became addictive, according to what I"ve seen, when there is plot change that turns the show into more of a soap opera than independent episodes.

Soap operas were always addictive. But starting a show as a soap opera is counter productive: intelligent people aren"t attracted, off the cuff, to inane twists and turns of the plot.

The Juice Exercise: what gives you "juice" in life?

I have been coaching people for many years now. The goal was always to take people on a journey to become their best Self.

Now, the task is easier when someone knows who they are. When someone has a Self.

Most people don"t. They have a persona for each group they interact with, the family persona, the student persona, the friend, the gossiper, the entertainer, the this and the that.

Those personas (roles you play) are not you. They were created by a perceived demand in the circumstances, a perceived demand in the environment.

They leave you empty, they leave you being jerked by the shoulds, and have to"s and the wants... like a puppet on a string.

You sense that you have no control, you sense that you are not you... a vague sense.

Back into light... The counter cultural way to become your higher self, no matter where you are.

Living in the three levels of value, the systemic, the extrinsic, and the intrinsic, lived fully, and balanced, is the secret to the good life.

The Indian sages, including the Buddha, skipped the extrinsic. They taught people not to live there. They had a disdain for it.

But work is on the extrinsic level, making money is on that level, so skipping it means living a life of charity. Living a life where you cannot value another person on all levels... because you don"t value the values of that level.

Learning lessons the hard way... or the easy way... Part 2

The brilliance in the movie, "It"s a wonderful life" is that the angel creates a thought experiment what the world would be like if our hero hadn"t been born.

Thought experiments are uniquely human: animals don"t do thought experiments.

The minimum intelligence required to create a thought experiment is 70... and I am not talking about IQ measured intelligence, I am talking about overall intelligence.

The average intelligence in the world is 50... But all my site"s visitors qualify.

So let"s look at that movie and see what is a thought experiment:

If X were different, in the movie take out the main character... and then look at different elements that you know how they are... the marriage, the loan bank, etc. The amount of happiness, the amount of difference.

Now let"s look at different examples of thought experiments, all in the area of my work of becoming someone who loves life, and lives it successfully.

Sometimes all you need is a tiny nudge... and you can go from unhappy to happy.

As you may know, I am doing my second round of the 67 steps. In step 13 Tai says something like this: if you are not happy, don"t throw everything away. It is possible that the unhappiness is due to a mismatch of your current lifestyle with your social needs...

Huh?

So I went back in my memory to different stages of my business, or the different businesses I had. And lo and behold, I found something totally freaky: I was happiest when I had at least one person cooperating with me in my business. Even if the cooperation was minor, and we didn"t interact much. Just knowing that I am not alone transformed my experience.

Now, this is a big surprise to me.

It is counter intuitive. I didn"t know that I didn"t know. I wasn"t even looking in that direction

And it is something that I can easily apply, easily accommodate without changing anything else.

More on fitness and vibration... using my own example

You may need to do a lot of preparation work before you can start doing the work in earnest

As I said, raising your vibration is like fitness. ((Your IQ, as in intelligence, is also like fitness. The difference is that you can raise your fitness in one lifetime, but you cannot raise your intelligence in one lifetime.

Certain ethnic groups have been focusing on intelligence, understanding, mostly.

Other ethnic groups focus on fitness, speed, endurance, strength.

And yet other ethnic groups focus on survival, easy life.))

Vibration is like fitness: no matter your ethnicity, no matter your starting point, you can raise it.

In this article I will share my fitness story, and we"ll see if I have something to teach you with that... lol.
Ok my fitness story: I am, genetically predisposed to be weak in body and strong in intellect.
As with everything, I refused to obey the weaknesses: I did sports: the kind of sports that didn"t require me to run, or throw something. Why not those? Because I have physical limitations from birth or from abuse: I don"t know and I don"t care.

So I was a swimmer, I payed table tennis, I was a gymnast (uneven bars) competitively.

When is was in university, I walked for hours; I didn"t have time to compete.
I was still relatively fit till I got myself a car...
Then I did the "pill popping" thing I mention in my previous article, and it seemed that fitness was over for me: even climbing the one flight ((I live on the second floor)) made me hurt so much, I had to sit down.

This past spring I asked Source if I could live in Italy or France. I have been craving seeing more.

The answer was yes/no... the reason for the no is that I can"t walk without pain.

OK, now, listen up! My whole father"s side of the family has pain in the legs and the hips from walking. But my father walked every day till the day he died at 80... and if he could do it, you can bet your sweet ass I can do it... lol.
So I started to walk. I have been walking every day since June.
And this week I have started to use my stair stepper: Tony Little Rock and roll stepper that I bought on Amazon, used, October 25, 2013, two years ago.

I didn"t use it all those years, because I needed to build up to using it.

I am ready, and I have been using since Tuesday.

Today I decided to connect drinking tea and using the stepper.

Every time I make tea for myself, I set it to brew, I set the kitchen timer, and go and step on the stepper, until I hurt... a lot. I did it six times yesterday. Six cups of tea, six times I stepped on the stepper. Today I have already done three times. Building strength, building stamina, 90 seconds at a time. This is not the first time: when I used to work in offices, 30+ years ago, I used to use the bathroom of another floor to force myself to run up and down every time... and it worked then, I know it will work now. 30-60 steps 10 times a day... easy peasy... just a little painful.

It is 90

In almost any endeavor, removing what you don"t want makes more difference than adding something good to the mix.

And although this makes a lot of sense, in spite of it not being common knowledge in self-improvement, you keep on trying to add stuff to your anxiety, to your inability to breathe,
